Drones and volcanoes

Flying a drone near a volcano requires reading much more than the map. Volcanic activity, wind, ash, gases, visibility, access and UAS restrictions can change quickly. VolcanoSpotting brings these signals together into a practical reading to support a safer, better-informed review before any flight.

Before considering a flight

Volcano status

Check whether the volcano is erupting, in unrest, under watch or showing no recent standout signals.

Wind and gusts

Review intensity, gusts and direction: they affect stability, return path, ash and gases.

Ash and gases

Ash can damage equipment and gases can make an apparently open area unsafe.

Visibility

Cloud, rain, fog, smoke or plumes can reduce visual reading and operational margin.

Safe distance

Avoid unnecessary approaches to craters, hot zones, unstable slopes or exclusion areas.

Access and exit

Plan arrival, observation point, alternative routes and exit if activity or weather changes.

UAS airspace

Cross-check restrictions, permits, protected areas, NOTAMs and the local aviation authority.

Operational reading for drones

Flying near a volcano is not only a regulatory question

A flight may be shaped by UAS rules, but also by eruptive activity, wind, ash, gases, visibility, ground access and real distance from the active area. The useful reading combines all of these factors before deciding whether a flight is worth deeper research.

Activity, ash and gases change the operation

A volcano that is erupting, in unrest or under watch does not behave like a static landscape. Thermal signals, seismicity, SO₂ emissions, ash or plumes can change the operational risk even if the airspace appears available.

Weather can matter as much as distance

Wind moves ash and gases, changes the drone’s workload, affects the return path and can turn a simple flight into a fragile operation. Gusts, direction, rain, cloud and visibility should be read together with the volcano status.

Airspace, permits and protected areas

VolcanoSpotting’s airspace layer helps locate UAS context and official references when available. Even so, the final decision should always be checked against the aviation authority, NOTAMs, natural parks, local restrictions and national rules.

Access, observation and exit plan

A good take-off point is not only the one with a strong image. It should provide enough distance, reasonable visual line of sight, battery margin, an alternative landing option and a clear exit if activity, wind or access changes.

VolcanoSpotting does not grant permits, does not interpret NOTAMs in real time, does not replace aviation authorities or volcano observatories and should not be used as the sole basis for deciding whether a flight is legal or safe.
